Inspired by his experience in the music industry, British artist Andy Dennett, also known as Add Subtract, has observed the fast-paced, high-energy lifestyle and obstacles that come with musical success. As a former DJ at clubs, festivals, and corporate events, as well as an artist liaison and record label promoter, Andy understands the ups and downs that individuals face in this industry. Regardless of genre or scale, fame can be overwhelming and push people to their limits. ...
Utilizing a mixed media approach, Add Subtract presents the Twisted Icons series - a collection that incorporates graffiti, collage, and paint to showcase an iconic artist. Each piece features a central portrait image of the artist alongside a collage that tells their unique life story.
From a pivotal moment in the life of an icon, a hero image is thoughtfully chosen and sometimes altered to highlight the source of inspiration for the artwork. Andy delves deep into the icon's story and expertise, absorbing every aspect, blending torn press clippings and album designs with spray paint, acrylics, pens, stickers, and even gold leaf.
The inspiration for every creation of Andy stems from a troubled soul battling inner demons. The struggles of addiction, money, power, and fame contribute to this fuel. Consequently, many of his pieces incorporate a yellow halo as a symbol of the enduring soul within each person. A "hello my name is" sticker is often deliberately placed in the composition as a reminder that we are all just individuals with names and faces.
